Empowering Mobility: How a Custom-Made Recumbent Bike Transformed Ian’s Life

Posted on 27th Jul 2023

Introduction

Everyone has a story, and today we are thrilled to share the inspiring journey of Ian, a 69-year-old living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease. This degenerative nerve disorder has not dampened his spirit, but it has affected his physical ability, especially when it comes to walking and balancing. Thanks to Freedom Wheels and our team of dedicated professionals, Ian has discovered newfound independence.

Understanding the Challenge

Living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease, Ian experiences continual pain, difficulty in walking, and has to wear braces on his legs for support. He shared with us, “I have no balance.” But he didn’t let these hurdles deter him from exploring ways to improve his mobility.

Collaborating to Create a Solution

In collaboration with his Occupational Therapist (OT), the Freedom Wheels team took on the task to design a custom-made recumbent bike to cater to Ian’s specific needs. We believed in the power of personalised solutions and aimed to create something that would not only be functional but also enjoyable for Ian to use.

Ian recounts his experience with our team saying, “From my first assessment with the OT and my regular contacts with the Freedom Wheels team, everyone was extremely caring, concerned, and interested in helping me. The workshop crew showed great patience with all my questions and could not have done more to help me get the bike ‘tricked’ up to suit me.”

A New Lease on Life

The impact of this collaboration on Ian’s life has been nothing short of transformational. Since receiving his recumbent bike, his quality of life has significantly improved. He shared, “It’s given me a new lease on life, I get out on it most days and I have put a basket on the bike to do my shopping. The car hardly comes out of the garage anymore!”

More Than Just Mobility

But it’s not just about the physical benefits. Ian now enjoys social rides over to see his children quite regularly, a journey of 17k’s each way. He has also joined a group of friends who cycle most weekends, significantly enhancing his social life.

Ian’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, innovative solutions, and community support. His journey resonates with our mission here at Freedom Wheels – to empower individuals and help them regain their mobility and independence. We are honoured to have played a part in his journey and look forward to continuing our work, making more such life-changing impacts.
